Which of the algorithms—first fit (FF), next fit (NF), or worst fit (WF)—would be most preferable when filling?

that really depends on what you know about the distribution of the sizes of the objects you want to fit, and ofcourse what you mean with most preferable. Minimize the wasted space , minimize the number of computations ?
