What is the book The Scarlet Letter about?
The book is about Hester Prynne, a Puritan woman, who becomes pregnant out of wedlock. The community freaks, and when the new town minister (Dimmesdale) calms them down, they make her wear a red letter "A" (for adulteress) on her clothing, always. Hester takes her baby and moves to the outskirts of town, though Hester remains involved in helping the community (the "A" could then mean "able" or "angel"). Hester's daughter, Pearl, turns out to be a precocious child, and the Puritan community (even Hester) thinks she is a little elfin. Turns out the town minister, the weak man/powerful speaker, is the baby's father. There are a few other plot twists- such as the arrival of Hester's husband- that are involved, too.
